Chiropractic

Chiropractic officially began in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer. Dr. Palmer two years later created the first chiropractic college in the world, Palmer School of Chiropractic. While this is the “official” start of chiropractic, ancient Chinese and Greek writings write of “spinal manipulations” to ease lower back pain dating back to 2700 B.C., and is then later mentioned by Hippocrates, the founder of western medicine in the 4th century B.C..

Chiropractic was founded with the premise of disease of the body stems from dysfunction of the nervous system. If the nervous system isn’t functioning correctly the brain can’t communicate efficiently with the rest of the body. Dysfunction can be caused by a spinal subluxation, a misalignment of the vertebrae, which causes inflammation on adjacent nerves. By correcting the subluxation using a specific chiropractic adjustment (manipulation) one can restore nervous system functioning by removing the inflammation, restoring proper nerve communication. Chiropractors focus on healing the nervous system without the use of surgery or drugs.

In School I was trained in many different techniques of chiropractic included Diversified, Gonstead, Thompson, Activator (low force / no thrust), and others, giving me many options when performing a chiropractic adjustment. This allows me to pick whatever technique seems to be the best fit for the patient in creating a functional and beneficial change.

Currently there are approximately 100,000 chiropractors in the world, including 65,000 in the United States. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) states approximately 30 million people see chiropractors each year.

In addition to treating musculoskeletal conditions chiropractic care has been shown to decrease nerve irritation in the body. By decreasing nerve irritation the brain can more properly communicate with ones’ muscles, organs, and all other parts of the body. This can help a person with many ailments from muscles,  the digestive tract to eyesight. A study done in 2001 showed how patients under chiropractic care had an increase in range of motion, compared to those not under care. This increased their daily living, allowing them to continue with activities while others were no longer able to participate. A decreased range of motion and mobility can result in a rapid decline in health and lead to many disabilities.

In the May 2007 issue of Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics used data and tracked patients that used chiropractors as their Primary Care Physician (PCP). The report analyzes data from 2003-2005 and found that patients visiting chiropractors had 60% fewer hospitalizations, 62% fewer surgeries and used 85% fewer pharmaceuticals than HMO patients who received traditional medical care. In addition, patients reported on the quality of care they received through the use of annual patient satisfaction surveys. During the 3 years of data, patients demonstrated a high degree of satisfaction with their care (96%, 94% and 91%, respectively).

My goal as a chiropractor is to not only alleviate your current problem, but get to the root of the cause and prevent future issues.
